CIRQUE Trottola

Campana

„In Campana, the bell rings and time inexorably goes by. And it’s all about time.

Family show – suitable for adults and children 10+ years
Duration: 90 minutes without intermission
Trottola Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)

The stars of new circus represent their long-awaited performance „Campana“. With its unique aesthetics, this brand new show offers spectators a glimpse into their own soul and entrains them into the vortex of emotion. Cirque Trottola, the ensemble beloved by the circus fans, also performs with great success in the Czech Republic, but for the first time at the ARENA festival.

When the circle is here, beings with eyes and hearts are here, elbow to elbow, looking at the gesture, listening to the silence, the slamming of noise, the language, the music, and then… And then we try, all of us, in a circle – along with the acrobat, the clown, the somersault, the weightlessness, the danger – to twist the reality, to push it back, to defy it so the sparkle appears in the eye, just for a moment, suddenly sensing the immeasurable: the circus. Then, with a tent, a few strings on a violin, a drum, a galloping music, with our hands, our eyes, our bones, from the most high to the shallows, from the trapeze to the caught hand, from the stunning pirouette to the clumsy prowess, with polished or unpolished shoes, ridiculously rushing and slipping, with suspended moments, embraces, disappearances, roles to play and downplay, with quite some energy, and an urge to laugh, and to surprise, with all this, we will ring “La Campana”.

“Two characters in search of light landing from elsewhere. They know the glimmer of dark depths, and search for the shimmer of high summits. Awe ! Looks converge on the ring. Spectators are here, so close and all around them…” Charlotte Lipinska

For more than fifteen years, Cirque Trottola and its artists have crafted a unique aesthetic, full of virtuosity, using circus as a canvas to picture the human soul. Nowadays, Bonaventure Gacon is one of the most sought-after circus artists, and in conjunction with Titouna, they form a pair that is hard to match in pair acrobatics. Cirque Trottola works and performs under a circus tent, redefining its circular contour at each and every show. As much as possible, Cirque Trottola goes on long tours, always striving to reach out to the audience. A life on the road and under the tent.

Circus ronaldo

La Cucina dell’arte

The kings of the comedy Ronaldo brothers will make a pizza how you‘ never seen before.“

Family show – suitable for adults and children 10+ years
Duration: 70 minutes without intermission
Ronaldo Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)

The famous Circus Ronaldo for the first time in Czech Republic! It’s already sixth generation that the circus family is traveling all around the world and makes lough a millions of spectators with their brilliant combinations of old and new circus with a poetic of commedie dell’arte. Brothers Danny and David Ronaldo are looking forward to show unforgettable and culinary experience to visitors of festival ARENA.

Danny Ronaldo apprenticed himself to the Sicilian master pizzaiolo, Paolino Bucca, and a cartwheeled kitchen barrow was filled to the brim with porcelain crockery and the necessary edible and jugglable foodstuffs. Once the rickety little kitchen cupboards open, an accordion starts to lead a life of its own, the spoons play a tarantella on the wine bottles and the ‘fragile’ show can begin. The audience is enticed into letting all its senses be indulged. They play all the remaining parts and are also ultimately the directors, who set the rhythm in a melancholy and hilarious chaos. The hierarchy behind the pots and pans of the professional culinary world had appealed to their imagination for some time. From head chef to kitchen assistant – a miniature society of stereotypes, a situation clowns dream of.

“Pizza acrobatic,a tutta fresca, tutta fantastica. Reçu à la table des frères Ronaldo sous le chapiteau de leur ‘Cucina dell’Arte’, on n’est pas resté sur sa faim. On n’en est même sorti gavé de bonne humeure pour longtemps. … Danny fait aussi l’honneur à la profession de clown dans cette popote italienne qui ne mangue pas de sel.” (Le Soir)

Circus Ronaldo is a small family concern, very much in keeping with the romantic circus tradition. They have performed generation upon generation, and the arts have been passed on from generation to generation. An outstanding combination was formed, of young artistic creators of flesh and blood, and old souls steeped in tradition. David and Danny were once again inspired by the old Commedia dell’arte and the stories of their forebears, but also by the taste of the future, which they picked up on the wind. With tremendous love and passion for their craft, they ceaselessly sought greater simplicity. In this way, for each performance, night after night, there was the desire to perform with the power of the minimal, confident that ‘nothing’ would become ‘something’ when given the room to be what it is.

Atelier Lefeuvre & André

Parbleu !

An avant première of a prestigious group that will revive everything that comes in its way.

Family show
Duration: 60 minutes without intermission
Loď Tajemství, anchored at the Smíchov embankment

Jean-Paul Lefeuvre and Didier André are one of the founders of the new circus genre. For over thirty years, they have created shows full of brilliant artistry, great acting performances and, above all, a joke with a good deal of self-irony and insight. They were introduced to the Czech audience by Ctibor Turba in 1994, after he met them as a teacher at one of the most important French circus schools, Center national des arts du cirque. They are currently members of the world-renowned ensembles Que-Cir-Que and Cirque O. The ARENA audience will have a unique opportunity to see their latest performance before its world premiere.

The artistic language of Jean-Paul and Didie is more and more natural with every passing year. It becomes a craft that is both modest and laborious, giving them center ring in their own particular sort of “slow circus”.

This new show aspires towards a minimalism that gives precedence to this brand of craftwork. Working to the bone each and every one of the props they found in the back of the shed (a board, a shovel, a sledgehammer…), they transform these everyday items with their ever-meticulous dexterity. In their careful hands, these objects are made to move, given a life, a soul and at times go even further, by becoming actual partners or, once in a while, stealing the limelight.

The circle is no longer the shape these artists evolve in. Now their exploits take place in a rectangle, one that looks like a petanque ground or a tennis court or a giant pool table… In any case the rules stay the same, and are the sacred rules of the sandpit: any and all fantasy is welcome but must be applied with care. Taking themselves far without taking themselves seriously, that is the hardest task of all.

Stripped of artifice, economical in motion, these two create a world of their own in which the useless argues happily with the paltry, and the absurd stretches to a laugh. Until, at the end, poetry appears as the common denominator of all those efforts in vain…

THE HAPPY PRINCE

There’s always been lack of heroes, but you yourself can become one,
so put aside your fears for now,and remember to maintain your love.

Family show – suitable for adults and children 5+ years
Duration: 60 minutes without intermission
Loď Tajemství, anchored at the Smíchov embankment

Matěj Forman returns to the Tajemství Boat with Oscar Wild’s fairy tale „The Happy Prince“. The unique space of the boat will be filled with an epic family show, which was created by the cooperation of the Forman Brothers‘ Theatre team with the Lampion Theatre and will be presented to Prague audiences for the first time at the ARENA Festival.

Behind the walls of the beautiful palaces, where it is easy to dance and easy to live, theworld is completely different. The world of the poor and often despised people which is not

even remotely as attractive and worriless, yet it is truthful. In the middle of the city, there isa beautiful gilded statue of a prince. He has gemstones instead of eyes, and there is a rubyembedded into his sword hilt. To the wealthy townsfolk, the statue of the “Happy Prince”represents their own welfare and prosperity, but the Prince himself, standing high above the city, looks down upon the penury of the poor, which he has not experienced during his life as a prince. The winter is coming and the swallows are heading to the south. One little swallow settled down under the statue of the Prince over night, and despite the approaching winter it cannot leave him. For its compassionate heart is stronger than the call for exotic sunny lands. But what about the Prince’s heart of lead? Can it also resound with love and compassion?

aladDin

A journey through an exotic land in pursuit of a great adventure.“

Family show – suitable for adults and children 6+ years
Duration: 60 minutes without intermission
Loď Tajemství, anchored at the Smíchov embankment

The family show Aladdin invites into the world of One Thousand and One Night. It tells the colourful story of the boy Aladdin, which interjects with the story of the King Shahryar and the brave and wise Scheherazade. A distant world fragrant with exoticism, a world of nomadic tribes, wise viziers, mysterious destinations, sprawling palaces with gardens belonging to powerful rulers and kings – all this unfurls in front of the audience. Thanks to a magic lamp he finds, the poor young boy Aladdin goes rags to riches. The genie indulges his every wish: a beautiful palace, where Aladdin ushers his new love, the princess Badralbudur. The fortune, which came to him with the magic of the lamp, is only short-lived and dubious. The young Aladdin must fight a powerful mage who has been after his lamp from the start and wants to take hold of it, and he has to rely on things that no magic can give him: his courage, the love of his princess Badralbudur and the loyalty of his camel, a friend he meets on his journey. Matěj Forman and his team created a magical show, where puppets, shadows, decorations, voice and music together bring alive caravans of camels, open the gates of a grand palace and, under a starry night sky, the vastness of desert beckons. This family show immerses audiences big and small in a world of imagination where a great adventure awaits.

I shall go into a hare, with sorrow and sych and meickle care

„Five women, five stories, one transformation“

Suitable for adults and children 8+ years
Duration: 75 minutes without intermission
The Obludárium Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)

Director Anna Klimešová celebrates achievements with her inscenations in many renowned theatres in the Czech Republic. Her production was performed for example in the Old Arena Ostrava, in Reduta Theatre in Brno, or at the new stage of the Prague City Theatres’ Komedie. The performance “I will turn into a hare with sorrow and broad discretion“ was first presented at Archa Theatre on May 6, 2019 within the residential program Archa.lab. Anna Klimešová is famous for her specific language which she uses again in this newly-produced inscenation of purely female collective.

The authorial inscenation of the students of the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre (The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) is called after the part of a sentence coming from Isobel Gowdie’s confessions in the middle of the tribunal in 1662. This sentence can be understood as a magic formula. And yet, don’t all the wishes we utter become this kind of formula?

The performance focuses on the desire of change. The hare is taken by the authors as a symbol of transformation. They ask, in which moments we can turn into a hare and what is the purview of the kind of ultimate situation.

Between day and night? Between good and bad decision? Between freedom and shelter?

Besides her own experiences, Anna Klimešová was inspired by the ethnographic studies of folklore traditions and magic of the areas from which the collective of authors come from (Milevsko, Sudety, Krkonoše, Bretaň, Slovácko, Dolné Považie, and Prague).

Tabernaculum (JAMU) / Mikrotrauma (Duncan Centre) / Sylfids

Suitable for adults and children 12+ years
Entire block duration: 60 minutes
The Obludárium Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)

With the motional performance from the Prague Duncan Centre, the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (JAMU) and the well-known collective of Holektiv we create an evening full of pair performances. The audience meet two calm Siamese grannies, a dance quarter, and finally witness some glimpses of acrobatics.

LE CABARET NOMADE: TABERNACULUM

“Encounter with two ladies bounded in one”

The project of JAMU performed under the international collective of Le Cabaret Nomade is interested in the phenomenon of Siamese twins. The audience can taste the problematics of beauty connected with this phenomenon thanks to two grannies, who wander side by side  their whole lives: cheek by jowl, and often with humor.
In the forgotten caravan under the crystal chandelier you are going to witness two people, two women, two ladies bounded in one. Awhile, you take part in a bizarre world from which (for them) there is no escape. Tabernaculum is a micro-performance for one visitor with the theatrical quickies inspired by the lives of the Siamese ladies.

Conception: Aude Martin Stulírová (FR), Marie Svobodová (CZ), Jazmína Piktorová (SK)
Performers: Marie Svobodová, Jazmína Piktorová / Aude M. Stulírová

ŽANETA MUSILOVÁ: MICROTRAUMA

„Tiny, often microscopic, or otherwise at sight imperceptible injuries… Repeated microtraumas can lead to the subsequent alternation of given structures.“

Microtrauma is a dance project of Žaneta Musilová, a student of dance conservatory of Duncan Centre in Prague. Four dancers will introduce the audience through an original choreography with their view on the functionality of system and the process of self-formation.

Choreography: Žaneta Musilová
Interpretation: Kateřina Jabůrková, Žaneta Musilová, Barbora Ptáčková, Ester Trčková Music: Noise tool – Chymera
Musical alteration: Adam Voves
Costumes: Žaneta Musilová

EVA STARÁ, KAROLÍNA KŘÍŽOVÁ: SYLFIDS

„The stage has been overruled by the dark fairies, the Sylfids. They have been prancing about at the world theatrical scenes since 1832, it has been just a question of time, when they get here, and how many of them.”

“Sylfids” combines the technique of classical ballet with pair acrobatics and grotesque in an original way. Thanks to its exceptionality, the performance was also to be seen previously at the domestic scenes such as Letní Letná, Fun Fatale, Za dveřmi, Luhovaný Vincent, Golden Praue, or abroad for example in Berlin or Petersburg.

“Hansel and Gretel as a horror story. Come to get scared with a fairy tale.“

Suitable for adults and children 10+ years
Duration: 35 minutes without intermission
The Obludárium Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)

When the story of Hansel and Gretel and the gingerbread house was conceived many years ago, Europe was being devastated by a famine so cruel that parents sometimes had to get rid of their own children to save at least their own lives. Of course, that couldn‘t happen today… or could it?
Two children travel the darkness as two little flickers of light. The actors use light as both a puppet and a symbol. Thus, Hansel and Gretel not only struggle to save their lives, but also their souls, as well as fighting in the ever-present war of light against darkness.

Air-acrobatics from the work of physical theatre of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (JAMU) is to be seen at the Obludarium Marquee. The inscenation that was premiered in March 2019 is after several repetitions coming also to Festival Arena at the Smíchov embankment.

It cost lots of strengths for human to deal with extension, seductiveness, and the danger of the airspace. To take off means to break ties. One has to come to control of their own fascination with the heights, so that it won’t lead them to death. Always to look forward… To what extend is this dangerous? And does it even have to be dangerous? Which ties shall we break? What shall we sacrifice to our delusion, our vision?

one thousand dozen

„Thousand dozens for eggs and one wooden man on the journey full of adventure.“

Suitable for adults and children 5+ years
Duration: 45 minutes without intermission
The Obludárium Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)

“The One thousand dozen” was created three years ago as a closing term exam. Since its existence it appeared at many international festivals and obtained acknowledgements for example at Skupa’s Pilsen, and in the Serbian puppet theatre festival The Golden Sparkle it gained the highest appraisal, Grand Prix.

Gold rush in Alaska differed from all others. He who desired for gold had to get through Chillkoot Pass, survive several avalanches, not to drown during sail to Dawson, not freeze in 60 degrees below zero and dig through several meters of snow, ice and frozen ground. Only complete fools were thinking about such an adventure. Who else would go on such a journey to get one dollar in gold for two dollars invested. But there were some whose intentions was not to get the gold from the ground, but from the people instead.

Concert

Imagine a place where you can ride a horse on green pastures. A place where the noise of a big city does not reach. Exactly from such an environment is country music. The music that descended from the hills and once engulfed the south of the United States, miraculously, came into the minds of boys from a completely different environment. Drums resembling horse stifling. Bass deep as Grand Canyon. Guitar melody, which will soften the sheriff’s heart. Banjo fast as stagecoach and balalaika razor sharp. All this accompanied by emotionally tuned singing…

STAYIN COUNTRY SINCE +/- 2010!

Fanfán Tulipán

Concert

Festival village

Fanfán will celebrate 10 years in June! We invite you to a special birthday concert that takes place on 20th June at the ARENA festival.

Playfulness, originality, groove and unusual instruments. This is the sign of the Fanfán Tulipán group.
The Fanfán Tulipán is an over-genre formation with Hammond melody, piano, transverse flute, Estonian zither, playing box and energetic rhythm. The main impulse of Fanfán’s work is a game with imagination. Look forward to musical adventures and original symbiosis of jazz, funk, d’n’b and chanson with Estonian spices and morse code rhythms – Fanfán’s genre “promiscuity” knows no boundaries… 🙂

In the past, the band won the JazzFruit competition at the Mladí ladí jazz festival and the Czech round of the international Jazz Prix competition. They have released their debut album Polyorama and EP Vulpea Lunatică, which they made available on their Bandcamp for free download. They are currently preparing another studio album.
The group was founded in 2009 by the composer Eliška Vidomus (formerly Svobodová), who is the author of the repertoire – her compositions are usually based on distinctive bass grooves and song melodies. She plays Hammond, Estonian zither and sings in the band. Other members are: Štěpán Zbytovský (Noční optika), pianist Petr Svoboda, bassist Pavel Husa (Bizarre Band) and drummer Šimon Hajdovský (North Innergy). Fanfán Tulipán performed at festivals Bohemia Jazz Fest, Jazz an der Donau, Jazz Goes To Town, Bratislavské jazzové dni, Bulgarian Bansko Jazz Fest and Romanian festival Sound Czech.

J. J. Big Band + DJ JEFFOLOGY

The ARENA’s closing party

Loď Tajemství, anchored at the Smíchov embankment

The closing party of the ARENA 2019 festival will offer, in addition to live music, a dance floor. DJ Jeffology, J.J. Big Band and more. Come and say goodbye to ARENA 2019 with us on the Loď Tajemství (Mystery ship).

The start itself will be accompanied by a sonic bang of pressurized pipes of the expected 105 dB Blues scale. Already at this stage of the flight, the Star Wars introductory theme will be heard, and after reaching the flight level, the crew will dive deep into the bottom of the reflections on How Deep Is Your Love. The moment the funnel of funk hits the windswept hull of the Mystery ship, the cockpit’s temperature rises sharply. This will be followed by an extraterrestrial party with compositions by authors who still work on Earth (Stevie Wonder, Jan Karez, Axel Rose), or have already decided to return to their native planets (James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Ludwig van Beethoven, or Amy Winehouse). And one cannot forget the singer, who has just rocked out on Bruno Mars recently. And there is also the name of the song that Věra Špinarová will sing thanks to the long distance communicator Zoom R16. As in the Wednesday Night Fever, the audience’s pupil will expand to see how five saxophones, played at 196 ° BPM, play with weightless ease with the super-heavy materials imported from the last mission of astronauts who familily call themselves Big Phat Band. Before the final approach to the landing, the trombones would open the wasserklappers to slow down to the base. The charming flight assistant Karolína Vágnerová will take care of you throughout the flight. Her turbulent vocal performance, stellar repertoire, and enjoyable performance will delight any holder of a valid boarding pass. Your safety will be guarded by the flight engineer, elegant musical juggler, great tennis player, excellent French jazz and soul singer and composer Hermes Karel, and Jan Karez, the first officer and helmsman in one person, will hold the helm firmly in his hands.

Note: throughout the voyage, the ship is anchored to the ground by steel cables and can be boarded and disembarked at any stage of the flight.
